Visual Sclerotherapy Vein Treatment in Minneapolis, MN Area

Sclerotherapy, which uses an injected solution to close the vein, is the most common treatment for varicose and spider veins on the legs.  When varicose or spider veins are visible to the eye, there is no need for guided ultrasound, because the provider already knows where to inject.

What to Expect

Sclerotherapy is performed in the clinic, in a sterile setting, under local anesthesia. You can go to back to work the same day, with very little downtime.

During the procedure, solutions is injected into the diseased vein, which irritates the inner walls of the vessel. This irritation causes the vein to collapse and close, allowing for blood to be re-directed to healthy veins. The body then reabsorbs the vein with time, resulting in a better look and feel to your legs.

A single sclerotherapy session can involve 10 to 30 injections. It is not uncommon for Dr. Afzal to do up to 60 injections in order to close the length of the diseased veins. The number of treatment sessions needed varies from patient to patient, depending on the extent of the venous disease. Our philosophy is to treat the whole leg at each session for best results.

After the procedure, it is common to experience some bruising or aching in the areas treated. Most patients have minimal discomfort and are able to continue with their daily activities. Less common side effects include allergic reaction, deep vein blood clots, ulcers, which are extremely rare in our practice. There can be worsening of spider veins, which is usually only temporary. In our practice we have never had an allergic reaction and the incidence of side effects is less than 0.1 percent, which is much lower than the national average.
