Dr. Frank Bures, M.D.

Doctor Frank Bures at Minneapolis Area Metro Vein and Cosmetic SurgeryDr. Frank Bures is board-certified dermatologic surgeon at Metro Vein and Cosmetic Surgery. His special medical interest in liposuction began in the 1990s with training from Dr. Patrick Lillis, one of the originators of tumescent anesthesia, and Dr. Gerry Berman. He began performing it in 1997.

Dr. Bures is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, the American Society of Liposuction, the American Academy of Dermatology, the Minnesota Dermatologic Society, the Iowa Dermatology Society and the Minnesota Medical Association.

Over the years, Dr. Bures has published many medical papers, and he has written a medical column since 1982 for several regional newspapers. He is a three-time winner of the Minnesota Medical Society’s Physician Communicator of the Year award.

Dr. Bures was born in Des Moines, Iowa. He attended college at Drake University in Des Moines for music education and went on to medical school at the University of Iowa from 1970-74. His general medical internship was in Denver from 1974-75, and his dermatology residency was at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin, from 1975-78. He began practice at the Winona Clinic in Winona, Minnesota in 1978, where he worked until 2013. He is a consultant to the La Crosse-Mayo Family Medicine Residency Program, a three-year residency program for medical school graduates who wish to practice family medicine, in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Dr. Bures and his wife, Ruth, live in Winona and have three sons, daughters in-law, and seven grandchildren.


Dr. Kamran Afzal, M.D

Doctor Kamran Afzal at Minneapolis Area Metro Vein and Cosmetic SurgeryAs a board-certified physician, Dr. Afzal utilizes cutting-edge, minimally-invasive technology to treat varicose veins, perform liposuction, hair restoration and the art of revitalizing the face with fillers. Dr. Afzal is considered a regional expert in vein disease care.

Dr. Afzal’s specialties include:

  • The treatment of varicose veins and spider veins. Dr. Afzal will get to the heart of your problem and solve it. Dr. Afzal is the regional trainer for Covidien, providing training on radiofrequency ablation, also known as the Venefit procedure. He is also a regional trainer for Vascular Solutions, a company that specializes in the development of medical devices for the vascular field, providing training on endovenous laser ablation, also known as EVLA, Laser and EVLT. He is the only vein doctor in Minnesota who holds this distinction.
  • Tumescent Liposuction, an in-office liposuction procedure performed under local anesthesia. The tumescent liposuction technique was created by well-known dermatologic surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Klein, with whom Dr. Afzal has personally trained.
  • Hair restoration and hair transplant services. Dr. Afzal studied under the direction of esteemed hair restoration doctor Alan J. Bauman. Dr. Afzal believes in results-based approach with all his treatments, so many medical therapies are offered to the patient before hair-restoration surgery is presented as an option.
  • Botox and fillers

Dr. Afzal’s passion in life is charity. He often says, “In the course of a day we go to work for OURSELVES, we pray for OURSELVES, we study in school for OURSELVES, we go to the gym for OURSELVES. But the question is, ‘What do we do for others?’”

For two weeks out of each year, in collaboration with the Hackett Hemwall Foundation, Dr. Afzal makes others a priority by traveling to small towns in Honduras and Mexico. There he treats painful varicose veins that cause chronic debilitating leg ulcers on patients who would otherwise go without care. He helps educate doctors from all over the world on the evaluation and treatment of varicose veins.

As part of his volunteer work, Dr. Afzal has led groups of phlebologists on medical missions to Guadalajara, Mexico each January since 2010, in addition to mission trips to Honduras. He celebrates his birthday by volunteering for Christian nonprofit Feed My Starving Children with his clinic staff, where they pack countless meals for people in Haiti. In addition, Dr. Afzal and his clinic staff have run the MuckFest MS, which benefits multiple sclerosis, since 2012.

Dr. Afzal is a member of the Minnesota Medical Association, the Society for Vascular Medicine, the American College of Physicians, the American College of Phlebology, the American Medical Association and the Hackett Hemwall Foundation.

Dr. Alia Sharif, M.D.

Doctor Alia Sharif at Minneapolis Area Metro Vein and Cosmetic SurgeryDr. Alia Sharif M.D., is board certified in internal medicine and is a diplomate of the American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine. She has devoted her career to the practice of minimally-invasive aesthetic medicine, including lasers, injectables and skincare. Her background in primary care medicine gives her the ability to communicate with and educate her patients in a manner not commonly seen in physicians of other specialties.

Dr. Sharif prides herself on her knowledge and training of the procedures she performs. She offers complimentary consultations to all patients so she can listen to their desired goals and formulate a personalized treatment plan in order to reach those goals.

Dr. Sharif finished her residency at the University of South Alabama and then moved to Minnesota, where she has been practicing since. She believes in helping her patients make informed, educated decisions, so she never stops training and learning new techniques. She and her staff continue to provide excellent care to their patients and hope to serve even more in the Twin Cities in the coming years.


Brielle, RN

Brielle - Nurse at Metro Vein adn Cosmetic SurgeryBrielle is a registered nurse who has been with Metro Vein and Cosmetic Surgery since 2011. She earned her associate’s degree in practical nursing from St. Cloud Community and Technical College in 2010 and is in the process of earing her bachelor’s degree from Bethel University

Brielle’s favorite part about working at Metro Vein and Cosmetic Surgery is getting to know the patients and making a difference in their lives. In her spare time, Brielle enjoys traveling, snowboarding, the outdoors and spending time with family and friends. She also has a passion for volunteer work and was instrumental in getting the clinic involved in “feed my starving children”
